"He loves me, he loves me not" is a childhood game we have all played, rooted in romance and innocence and a blind naive hope. It is actually a game of french origin by the name "Effeuiller la Marguerite." However, unlike the english version where there is only a 50% chance of being loved or rejected, in the french version it is said: 

"il/elle m'aime un peu - beaucoup - passionément - à la folie - pas du tout," 

meaning: 
"he/she loves me a little - very much - passionately - madly - not at all."

What moved me is that in the French version there are four different ways to love another person; in the English, only one. There is a passionate desperation you feel towards the object of your affection that leads you to turn to picking the flowers off petals in your frenzy to know if your feelings are reciprocated. You clutch that flower to your chest and with it, the faith that as long as that petal clings to it's home your affections will be returned, and you will be happy. And yet the desperation never goes away, knowing that the lone remaining petal can fall away at any moment, and the love will be tarnished. Love, after all, is as fleeting as a flower's life.
