In Greek mythology, the Nereids are sea nymphs or goddesses of the sea, and keepers of the sea shore, the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, sisters to Nerites. These female spirits of sea waters. They were distinct from the mermaid-like Sirens and unlike their evil counterparts, the nereids were the patrons of sailors and fishermen, who came to the aid of men in distress, and had in their care the sea's rich bounty. Individually they represented various facets of the sea, from salty brine, to foam, sand, rocky shores, waves and currents, in addition to the various skills possessed by seamen.
The name Nereid also refers to the third-largest moon of Neptune, which has a highly eccentric orbit. It is named after the Nereids, sea-nymphs of Greek mythology and attendants of the god Neptune.
